Catch a boat to an island

From most places in Europe, at least, Greece is a very accessible destination. A couple of hours on a plane (around four for the furthest countries) and you’re in Athens. Starting this month, there are even direct flights to some islands, such as Corfu and Crete.

 

June is an ideal month to visit: cool enough to wander about ancient sites, warm enough to swim. Still green, but with summer blossoms such as oleander and bougainvillea in full bloom. School’s not out yet, so it’s still pretty quiet and prices are lower than in the high season.

There are plenty of things to see and do in Athens itself, and there are many beautiful mainland sites worth a visit, such as the Meteora or Mycenae. However, one of the most fun things to do is catch a boat to an island.

 

Get a room by the beach.

 

Watch the sunset. Wispy clouds and lavender mountains.

 

Sit by an ancient olive tree.

 

Eat outdoors.

 

These pictures are from Thasos, a large, wooded island in the North Aegean. But with a couple of hundred inhabited islands to choose from, there’s something for every taste.

 

Gulls follow the boat.

  2. I’ve always wanted to visit Thassos. I’ve been to 43 Greek islands, but not Thassos. I’m returning to our boat in Greece this week, and I’m looking forward to exploring some more of your fabulous country.

    1. It’s hard to choose – and one tends to want to go back to favourite places. Thasos is well worth it, especially as you like hiking. It is a little out of the way, though

  5. You remind me of the attractions of Greece so well. Happy memories, despite the insect bites!
    Lovely photos, and really enticing. I am not that good on boats, but have flown to the larger islands, like Corfu and Crete, as well as the mainland. (Athens, and Cape Sounion)

You’ve made me very nostalgic for Santorini; eating outside in Thira, watching the sun set over the sea, or walking into the village from where we were staying for breakfast at the kafeneío, early in the cool morning, with white dust coating my feet. The taste of fresh tomato sliced onto bread rubbed with garlic and olive oil, and a handful of delicious black olives… Yes, you’ve tempted me, so sad it’s all so far away.

  12. As the weather in the S.W. of France continues to be absolutely foul – yes! you have tempted me, nay taunted me, with your images of blue skies and balmy seas. Mind you, I was even envious of the weather in the U.K. a couple of weekends ago so that’s how bad it is 😦

  13. Athens is on our list to visit. A few weeks ago we did take a boat trip to Samos, but from Kusadasi in Turkey. We ate a lovely mousakka beneath olive trees in the garden of a lovely restaurant, and finished with baklava and a sweet greek wine. (Which was quite strong!).
